Twitter has finally launched Topics in India, a feature it announced last year in November. Twitter users can follow certain Topics that they’re interested in, and see more content from the Topics chosen. Users can hit the follow button beside the topic to get updates based on their interests.
Twitter in its blog has said that the new feature allows people to get more tweets, posts from the topic of their interest in their feed. Topics also allow users to connect with followers with similar interests and have discussions about their favourite topics. This way they can also expand the reach of their profile and get more visible.
Talking about the new feature, Manish Maheshwari, MD, Twitter India, “India is an important market for Twitter. We want to strengthen the service’s value for Indian audiences by giving them more control over what they want to see on their timelines. Topics will allow people to engage with content they love and find people with like-minded interests, empowering them to choose their feed. The addition of Hindi Topics demonstrates our commitment to diversity of conversations across languages. We are excited to see these vibrant conversations flourish on Twitter in India.”
Interestingly, Twitter Topics in India are available in English and Hindi. Topics in Hindi will be visible in Devanagari script, and in Hindi speech typed in the Roman alphabet. Topics will appear in Hindi only when the device language is set to Hindi. Twitter has highlighted some of the Topics available in Hindi, and these include Agra (आगरा), Patna (पटना) and Pune (पुणे), general interests like Animals (जानवर), Horoscope (राशिफल), Poetry (कविता) and Technology (प्रौद्योगिकी), Sports (खेल).
However, to access Topics in Hindi, a user will need to set their device language as Hindi. Only then you will be presented with various topics in Hindi. Hindi is the seventh language to be added to the list of Topics. Apart from Hindi, Topics are also available in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Korean.
