Microsoft is working on an affordable Surface laptop. Codenamed Sparti, the upcoming Surface laptop will be aimed at students, reports WindowsCentral.
According to the report, the affordable surface Laptop Sparti will feature a 12.5-inch display. The laptop will run on Intel core i5 processor.
The entry-level variant of the laptop will come with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. It will come with Windows 10 S out-of-the-box. The rumoured Surface laptop is said to be priced between $500 ( ₹36,000 approx.) and $600 ( ₹44,000 approx.).
Microsoft’s Surface lineup has primarily focused on niche and premium segment of tablets and PCs segments. The company also experimented with an affordable Surface Go which starts at $399 ( ₹30,000 approx.).
Surface Go comes with a 10-inch display. It has up to 8GB of RAM, up to 128GB storage, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8-megapixel rear camera, and Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y.
The premium Surface Laptop 3 comes in 13.5-inch and 15-inch display options. The device is available in 8GB or 16GB LPDDR4x RAM options. The 13.5-inch model comes with quad-core 10th gen Intel Core i5-1035G7 and 1065G7 processor options. The 15-inch model is available with AMD Ryzen 5 3580U and 7 3780U processor options. The Surface Laptop 3 is available in India for a starting price of ₹1 lakh approximately.
That said, Microsoft’s affordable Surface laptop will come at a time when laptops are seeing a revived demand. With users working remotely due to the pandemic, laptop companies are aggressively pushing new and premium devices. An affordable device, however, could give Microsoft an edge over the competition.
